Hey, Boo: Harper Lee & To Kill a Mockingbird

Harper Lee: American Masters is an updated version of her acclaimed 2012 film Harper Lee: Hey, Boo, created in celebration of the release of Go Set a Watchman—Harper Lee’s long-lost first novel. As the author of Scout, Atticus & Boo: A Celebration of To Kill a Mockingbird, Murphy was granted early access to Watchman and used it to reframe Lee’s legacy, exploring the surprising origins of her iconic characters and the mystery surrounding the manuscript’s rediscovery. The film, produced for PBS’s American Masters series, features rare interviews with Lee’s family and friends, as well as reflections from literary and cultural figures such as Oprah Winfrey, Tom Brokaw, and Anna Quindlen. Through this documentary, Murphy offers an intimate portrait of Lee’s life, the impact of To Kill a Mockingbird, and a fresh look at one of America’s most beloved authors.
